How to Grill Safely

Safety while grilling

outdoor grillYou could be mistaken for thinking that it is impossible to do anything but grill safely. However grills can be more dangerous than most people would believe was possible. Yet grilling safely is something that needs to be taken seriously, as grills can cause injuries if you do not use them properly. Being sensible whenever you have to use a grill should markedly reduce the risks of accidents happening. Accidents can still happen yet applying common sense should prevent the majority of potential accidents actually becoming a reality.

Grill safely begins with the basics, keeping parts of your body away from it, especially when it is on. Most people at some point will burn themselves on a grill, or indeed an oven. Often it is done when you have to move something that has got on to the grill. Your first instinct is to grab whatever it is and not remembering that you are not wearing oven gloves until you have burned yourself. It is done easily enough, something done on the spur of the moment as it seems the right thing to do without thinking about any safety consequences.

To prevent accidents and use your grill safely you need to wear oven gloves or a cloth whenever you are placing something under the grill, or whenever you are taking something away from the grill as it has finished being cooked. Whether they are electric, gas, or wood fueled grills can get really hot when you are using them to cook food. Therefore you will need gloves or a cloth to hold the utensils you are using to put things under and then take them away from the grill. Gloves are good to wear as they absorb the heat from the grill as well as the utensils you use to cook food on the grill with.

Before you put the grill on make sure that all of your utensils are good enough to help you grill the food without inadvertently causing yourself harm in the process. Tongs, spatulas, and forks are useful utensils for putting things under the grill and then retrieving the cooked food later on.

Generally people put food into grill pans so that it cooks better when it is under the grill. Further more grill pans should make using any grill safer. After all the food is cooking in a single pan that has a handle. Providing the handle does not get too warm you should not get hurt or burned when putting food under the grill or getting it out after it has been cooked. If you believe that the grill panhandle has become too hot then you can grab the handle with an oven glove on, or with a cloth.

Fat, grease, and oil can cause grills to drip hot liquid on to you if you are putting things under the grill or taking the cooked food away. Hot fat is certainly not something you want to drip on to your skin as it could scald you. Wearing oven gloves can solve that problem, as can cleaning the grill on a regular basis.
